Determining puma habitat suitability in the Eastern USA

چکیده
Abstract Pumas ( Puma concolor ) were eliminated from most of the eastern USA a century ago. In past couple decades, their recovery in West has increased puma dispersal into Midwest, with some individuals even traveling to East Coast. We combined published expert opinion data and habitat suitability index an analysis that identified 17 areas Upper Ozarks, Appalachia, New England could potentially host populations future. Thirteen these larger than 10,000 km 2 so likely ensure population’s long-term genetic health. Further, we quantified patch size, human density, livestock percent public land, sociocultural reflecting wildlife values for comparing patches, as well present summary current legislation relevant management East. Our work may be useful identifying suitable restore pumas based not only on quality biophysical habitat, but also social conducive puma-human coexistence.

habitat suitability modeling for wild boar (sus scrofa) in eastern alamut, qazvin province
wild boar is distributed throughout iran except highly arid areas. in recent years, however, population size of wild boar has increased primarily because of reduction in population size of natural predators such as leopard. conversely, changes in land-use practices and increase in foraging of livestock in natural habitats has led to reduction of food resources and consequently, has forced the s...
متن کاملUncertainty in Various Habitat Suitability Models and Its Impact on Habitat Suitability Estimates for Fish
Species distribution models (SDMs) are extensively used to project habitat suitability of species in stream ecological studies. Owing to complex sources of uncertainty, such models may yield projections with varying degrees of uncertainty. To better understand projected spatial distributions and the variability between habitat suitability projections, this study uses five SDMs that are based on...
متن کاملHabitat Selection and Home Range Dynamics of Eastern Spotted Skunks in the Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas, USA
Since the 1940s, eastern spotted skunks (Spilogale putorius) have declined dramatically throughout the Midwest. One hypothesis for the decline is the loss of suitable habitat, although little is known about the ecological requirements of this species. To elucidate seasonal home range and habitat selection by eastern spotted skunks, we conducted telemetry-based field work in the Ouachita Mountai...
متن کاملModeling the habitat suitability of Botak-e-Fars, Cyprinion tenuiradius Heckel, 1849 and determining the impact of Climate Change on its distribution in Fars province
In this study, environmental and climatic variables were used as independent variables to determine the habitat suitability of Cyprinion tenuiradius in Fars Province and to investigate the impact of climate change on its distribution. Modelling was conducted in an R software environment using the MaxEnt algorithm. Based on the results, the performance and accuracy of modelling were good (AUC = ...
متن کاملDetermining Organization-Specific Process Suitability
Having software processes that fit technological, project, and business demands is one important prerequisite for software-developing organizations to operate successfully in a sustainable way. However, many such organizations suffer from processes that do not fit their demands, either because they do not provide the necessary support, or because they provide features that are no longer necessa...
